Killing joke live again! I had to jump at the chance to see this legendary band again, after several years. Attending with friends, we arrived on the balcony of the O2 academy in Leeds. Alcohol purchased, we took our places looking down, with a good view of the stage and crowd gathered in the main floor. The lights go down, and guitar effects start the gig. The band then walk on stage and launch into 'Love Like Blood'. This is awesome goosebumps stuff - a great start!
Jaz Coleman's soaring vocals and Geordie's iconic guitar sound. Add to that the strong rhythm section of Youth on bass and Paul Ferguson on drums, with his tribal sound. The next track is 'War Dance'. The intensity goes up a notch, a stunning start to the set! Then comes 'The Fall of Because', from the 'What's This For?' Album. Next up is 'I am the virus', and Jaz addresses the crowd. Then comes a stirring version of 'Requiem'! The next 3 songs are 'We Have Joy', 'Money Is Not Our God', and 'This World Hell'. Killing joke are an intense band - the sheer power of them is awesome! Really enjoying this from our vantage point. Next track is 'Primitive', showing the powerful rhythm section of Youth and Ferguson. The middle section sees 'Turn To red', 'Mathematics of Chaos', and 'Death and Resurrection Show,' which was the name of their recent film. The last part of the main set sees 'Total Invasion', 'Loose Cannon', and 'The Wait', ending with the classic 'Pssyche'. The band go off amongst cries for more.
We are shell-shocked from the sheer power of it all. The band appear for their encore, and they perform 'The Pandys Are Coming', and 'Change', and ending with a stirring performance of 'Pandemonium'.What an awesome set this was by one of the best live bands around! I haven't seen them since 1983, and they were well worth the wait! Stunning stuff indeed!
Below is their song, 'Love Like Blood', from the official Killing Joke YouTube channel. Check it out!
