"Maybe" By Darwin McD
Busy focusing on collaborations with assorted notable vocalists, it has been about four years since Darren McDermott, a.k.a. darwinmcd has released a solo instrumental work. This month brings a return to the format that he cut his musical teeth on, with the single “Maybe.”
This track offers those galloping arpeggios and light joie de vivre that are part of his signature sound. This danceable work is a musical landscape for your mind’s eye, leading to a sunlit vista with a view of a hopeful future.
The Extended Mix – my personal favorite, provides an extra dose of endorphin-triggering rises and gentle falls accentuating the subtle changes in the composition. As I tend to experience music viscerally, this one left me in a state of overwhelming elation.
With the Zinqmind remix, Anthony Georgiou, hailing from Northumberland, England, brings his light style in a way that elevates Maybe to an even higher level, grounding his version with a contrasting heavier hitting bassline and additional percussive punctuation.
The name Secret Space Program may be a new name for many listeners. This recent project is a revolving-door collective involving former members of Utah-based Eminent Sol with a handful of other prominent indie synth-pop musicians from the USA, Canada, New Zealand, and Europe. With a lush, cinematic feel, this emotionally charged contribution is peppered with light industrial elements which evoke the 1980’s science fiction that heavily influences this generation.
For the shorter attention spans, the Radio Edit provides no less of the aural experience of the original, or that glorious Extended Mix, but there is honestly no need to choose one over the other. Simply start at the beginning and enjoy the *run time* ride.
“Maybe” is now playing on independent radio shows, and Pre-sales of the CD maxi single start on June 2 at darwinmcd.bandcamp.com in preparation for a June 16 release across streaming platforms.
